Des-RICHMOND, VA–A sea of teenyboppers flooded the Richmond Coliseum Tuesday night, Jan. 29, to see headliners Bow Wow and Chris Brown on the Up Close and Personal tour.
The Shop Boyz set the night off and was barely understood by the crowd of nearly 5,000 after two, unclear, songs. It wasn’t until a man hit the stage with a red fro-hawk and patriotic-colored guitar to help perform their hit, “Party Like a Rock Star,” that the crowd started to feel the ‘Boyz.
Soulja Boy hit the stage next in oversized sweat pants, white T shirt, and signature white specs with his name written across the lenses.
He borrowed Hurricane Chris’ “Hand Clap” and “A Bay Bay” before performing his own, “Yahh.”
“Where my Soulja girl at?” Soulja asked, receiving a thunderous response from the crowd of mostly females. He performed “Soulja Girl” and kept the ladies entertained as he humped the stage, sans shirt, to Dream’s “Falsetto.”
It was pretty much an impossibility not to expect to see Soulja hit the crowd with his record-breaking hit “Crank Dat.”
And, “Crank Dat,” he did. “You’lllllll,” the track played, as members of the audience, all ages, cranked their best Soulja Boy. It was amazing to see how well just about everyone in the audience knew the dance as Soulja left them screaming for more.
This was Soulja’s best performance since his other songs were heavily laden with his hype man, A-Rabbit, screaming over him.
After Soulja cranked the crowd up, Co-headliner Bow Wow was lowered onstage in a prop-G4 private jet. Bow jumped out, literally with a bang, and performed songs including, “Fresh Azimiz.”
“I’m single now, I ain’t with Ciara,” Bow Wow said, changing the lyrics and publicly stating the status of his and Ciara’s relationship–or lack-there-of. The ladies, obviously happy to hear that he’s single, screamed as if they wanted change his single status.
With consistent energy, Bow Wow continued his set by reintroducing himself on “Bow Wow (That’s My Name),” a song he recorded at age 13.
He partied with the crowd on “Let’s Get Down,” then showed a softer side as he tapped into some of his love songs, including “Let Me Hold You Down” and “Like You.”
The highlight in his entire performance was when Bow brought a little girl from the audience on-stage and danced with her to “Outta My System.” It was a moment that surely filled the teenaged fans, begging to touch the 20-year-old rapper, with jealousy.
Whether a fan or not, Bow Wow’s high-energy and acceptable-for-all-ages set, were on point. It’s good to see the growth in his performances as he matures.
After thanking the parents and fans for their support, a 60-second countdown in laser-lights, was all that stood between the fans and seeing Chris Brown on the stage. The crowd eagerly counted down as if it was New Years Eve.
Once they reached zero, an animation of Brown fighting galactic haters was continued in real-life, as Brown descended from a wire onto the stage to a well-choreographed performance of “Wall to Wall.”
The stage was fully equipped with stairs, slides, poles, pyro, laser-lights, projections of Brown playing various instruments, a drummer, and DJ Baby Dru on the turntables.
Brown performed “Gimme Dat,” featuring Lil’ Wayne via life-sized projection, then paid homage to the ’80s in an Adidas track suit shell-toed sneakers. A break dance battle broke out pinning of female versus the male dancers.
Rumors of a potential romance between Brown and Rihanna were only fueled when he gave a heart-felt performance of his version of her hit, “Umbrella,” called “Cinderella.” He sang to a projection of Rihanna while dancing with an umbrella in hand.
With the popularity of go-go music here, in Brown’s home state of Virginia, he gave an explosive performance of the go-go inspired “Throwed.” This was a performance received particularly well by the crowd as he danced in the difficult go-go-style.
The whole night, the audience wondered about a large circle-shaped object covered with a black tarp, in the back of the floor seating area.
Brown revealed a round, rotating, platform that tilted with his every dance move as he performed “Lottery.” This was an impressive performance because, when the wall tilted to steep positions, he gripped it like Spider-Man and kept every note.
On most songs, Brown allowed the voice-over track to assist him with many of the notes, but he intimately gave it his all when he hit every note on “With You.”
Chris Brown and Bow Wow really got up close and personal and delivered He continued to dance the night away and wrapped up the show with a special appearance by Bow Wow, performing their song “Shortie Like Mine. They delivered a high-energy show and left fans glad they got up-close-and-personal with the young stars.
