Another joint off the collective tape, “How Fly” featuring Curren$y and Khalifa. I just noticed that I (we) still call these things mixtapes. For one, they’re mp3 files, not tapes. Two, when they’re purchased on the streets, they are CDs, again, not tapes. Random thought.
Hmm…I heard the radio rip yesterday, and just commandeered the CDQ from the Smashers, and i must say that this will have to grow on me. “Get Up” didn’t really smash the way it should have and this is still a little to calm for me. Maybe he should deliver another “I Get Money.”
Major props to Sav for shooting this over, promptly after the Def Jam/Kanye West conference call, I assume. Ok, so at this point I’ve heard all but three songs, and I’m reserving judgment until I hear the retail CD.
I guess this is what I was waiting for the other day but I definitely think this joint was worth the wait. I like it more than “Love Lockdown.” Kanye actually raps on it despite lot of Vocoder work. The song is not fully mastered yet but it still goes in. I’m expecting some grand strings to be over the hook when the final version does come through but, nevertheless, the song is hot.
By the way, Kanye held a listening party for “808s and Heartbreak” and, as I said before, the whole album is similar to the songs we’ve heard thus far. I think it’s, not only a creative move, but a smart move as a marketing strategy. He has positioned himself so that he is able to step outside of the box and still be accepted. This will allow him to expand on his style and broaden his target market while still keeping the loyal fans.
